Thank God for Christmas

Thank God for Christmas
Where the year's loose ends are tied
And tidied,
And we are free to say
What other months and feasts and days
Forbid with their conventions;
Where we look deeper still
To where important ones are sought
And brought from year's obscurity;
Where respects are paid
And maybe some allowed
Before the lengthening days usurp
The fledgling year,
That, growing stronger with the sun,
Takes us on to pathways
Of uncertain charting
Till we draw breath again
And pause
At cycle's turning,
To witness rebirth
And appreciate again with you
What's true.
