The ridge where Edenderry framed its name,
The Brow, where challenge found once grew the Oak,
John Wesley with his Method preaching came
And Friends at Meeting House their message spoke.
It sent the infant Boyne around through Meath
And pushed the Barrow watershed down south,
Withstood a reckless cyclist with his speed
And patiently contrived to wear him out.
Then day by day and year by year resigned
Saw gear by gear the speed drop down the Rise,
Till slowly walking stopped, to read a sign,
And knew it was a subterfuge disguise.
Where acorns fall, to struggle as they will
A passing soul acknowledged Heartbreak Hill. |
