Going Home

We came by ambulance a week ago
And travelled home today by Liffey Road,
Where leaping salmon spring against the flow
Since stone-age rivers welcomed them back home.
We turned again to find The Longridge Way,
That Esker Ridge to guide the Pilgrim Train,
We reached the Brow the first Franciscans claimed
And read the signed that gave the place its name.

I thought of all the carers that I've known,
The first responders in each hour of need,
I thought of those responders to my own,
And here salute their courage, skill and speed.

And then I saw the cards and prayers that said
Thank you for being my Doctor and my friend.
